Federal prosecutors have charged Ruthia He, CEO of Done Global, and Dr. David Brody, the company’s clinical president, in a $100 million scheme to distribute Adderall and other stimulant drugs through telehealth. The Department of Justice announced their arrest for their roles in providing “easy access” to these drugs, often without legitimate medical purposes.
Ruthia He, arrested in Los Angeles, and Dr. Brody, arrested in San Rafael, California, are accused of defrauding insurance companies, obstructing justice, and illegally prescribing stimulants like Adderall. The DOJ highlighted this case as the first criminal drug distribution prosecution linked to telemedicine.
According to court documents, the company generated over $100 million in revenue by prescribing more than 40 million stimulant pills. Patients were lured with deceptive ads, paying a monthly subscription fee through Done Global’s platform. The defendants allegedly structured the platform to make accessing stimulants easy by limiting medical evaluations and pushing prescribers to approve drugs, even when patients didn’t qualify.
Despite being informed that some patients overdosed and died due to their methods, He and Brody continued their scheme. Prosecutors also allege that they defrauded pharmacies, Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurers.
The CDC issued a warning that the disruption caused by this case could affect up to 50,000 patients nationwide. Done Global, launched two years ago to address mental health needs, continues to operate while denying the criminal charges.
If convicted, He and Brody could each face up to 20 years in prison.
