Jamey Myles Charged with Attempted Murder of Bettendorf Officer

Myles also faces domestic abuse and child endangerment charges

BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) — A 23-year-old Bettendorf man is facing multiple felony charges, including attempted murder of a peace officer, after a violent domestic incident on May 21.

Police responded to a home in the 2600 block of Cypress Drive following reports of a domestic disturbance. According to court records, when officers arrived, they attempted to safely evacuate three children from the home. One officer encountered Jamey Myles at the bottom of a staircase holding a firearm.

Despite commands to drop the weapon, Myles allegedly squared his body and raised the gun, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The officer was shot twice, and Myles was also struck. Another officer was injured during the incident, though the nature of their injuries was not specified. The children, who were behind the officer at the time, were unharmed but directly in the line of fire, police said.

Prior to the shooting, Myles allegedly choked the victim, dragged her by her hair, and later broke into the home after she locked him out. He then armed himself and threatened the victim, according to court documents.

Police said Myles’ brother tried to deescalate the situation just before officers arrived. During an interview, Myles admitted knowing an officer was coming down the stairs but denied firing at him.

Myles is currently held at the Scott County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond. He faces the following charges:

Attempted murder of a peace officer

Three counts of child endangerment

Domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury

Domestic abuse assault impeding air/blood flow

Assault on persons in certain occupations

Intimidation with a dangerous weapon

In a separate incident on April 13, Myles was charged after police responded to another call on Cypress Drive. He was allegedly intoxicated and fighting in the street, attempted to grab an officer’s weapon, and resisted arrest.

For the April case, he was charged with:

Assault on persons in certain occupations

Interference with official acts causing bodily injury

Public intoxication

He was released on a $1,000 cash bond, and a pretrial conference in that case is scheduled for June 18.

KWQC has reached out to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Bettendorf Police Department for further comment.
