DECATUR, Ind. — Anthony Currie, a former pharmacist and wrestling coach at Adams Memorial Hospital, has been charged with felony counts related to the theft of thousands of pills from the hospital’s pharmacy.
Currie faces one count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and three counts of theft after allegedly diverting roughly 32,827 pills, including Oxycodone and Percocet, valued at nearly $23,000 over a period of about two years.
The investigation began last month when an attorney for Adams Memorial Hospital alerted police to suspicious activity. Pharmacy staff had observed changes in Currie’s behavior and health, leading to a fitness-for-duty evaluation that included a drug test. Court records reveal the test detected benzodiazepines, opioids, and amphetamines, substances Currie had reportedly predicted he would test positive for.
When confronted with evidence of falsifying prescriptions and pill diversion, Currie admitted to printing forged prescriptions and manipulating inventory records. He allegedly ordered pills to stock the pharmacy but recorded lower quantities in the hospital’s system, effectively stealing the difference.
A DEA agent assisted the hospital in conducting an audit that traced the missing pills back to 2023.
Currie was arrested and booked into the Adams County Jail on Wednesday afternoon. His initial court hearing is scheduled for Monday.
