Prosper Mpofu Charged with Impersonation and Fraud

Allegations Arise from Deceptive Medical Practices

by Amelia Crawford

Taurai Prosper Vanhuvaone, also known as Prosper Mpofu, has been brought to court facing serious charges of impersonation and fraud. The incident unfolded when a couple, seeking medical help for Ndlovu’s wife, who suffers from a heart condition, visited Mpilo Hospital under the belief they would receive assistance from a qualified doctor.

Upon arrival, they were told to wait for Mpofu, who had instructed them to join the queue at the outpatient department. After consulting with a different doctor, they were later led to a private room by Mpofu, where they were confronted by hospital authorities.

Prescriptions issued by Mpofu soon circulated on social media, revealing numerous errors such as incorrect dosages and misspelled drug names, raising serious concerns about his qualifications.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed Mpofu’s arrest. This is not his first brush with the law; he previously faced charges of assault in 2022, during which he claimed to be a fifth-year medical student.

Mpofu’s case highlights a troubling trend in Zimbabwe, where fake doctors have been exploiting vulnerable patients, often leaving them out of pocket and without proper medical care.
