Two Maryland Men Arrested in $8 Million ATM Robbery Scheme

Jonathan Winston and Jeffrey Felder linked to 75 ATM thefts across the DMV region

MARYLAND, USA – Federal law enforcement has arrested two Maryland men, Jonathan Winston of Hagerstown and Jeffrey Felder, in connection with an elaborate scheme that allegedly involved robbing at least 75 ATMs across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area, resulting in an estimated loss of $8 million to businesses.

The robberies took place between August 2023 and June 2024. Winston and Felder were apprehended in Georgia by U.S. Marshals as part of an ongoing investigation involving the FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). They are the fourth and fifth suspects arrested in this case, following the earlier arrests of Stefon Janey, Thomas Hughes, and Jenarro Hewett in July.

U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves reported that, during the arrests of Felder and Winston on October 15, 2024, law enforcement recovered 12 firearms, over $80,000 in cash, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and thousands of dollars worth of high-end clothing and merchandise.

The crew allegedly developed a sophisticated method for removing ATMs, with roles designated for each member during the heists. Some members waited in the getaway vehicle, while others pried open doors and subdued store employees. They often communicated using handheld radios and executed multiple robberies within a single evening.

According to U.S. Attorney Graves, the suspects employed tools such as the “Jaws of Life” to forcibly open ATMs located inside stores and outside banks. Despite their attempts to destroy surveillance footage and obstruct evidence gathering, law enforcement officials were able to identify the suspects involved.

ATM thefts remain a persistent issue in Maryland, highlighted by a recent incident where a van crashed into a Montgomery County gas station to steal its ATM.
