Marc Weiss, 50, from Charlotte, North Carolina, was sentenced to 40 months in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud in October 2023. He embezzled $1.6 million from two small businesses in Mooresville where he worked as a bookkeeper from 2016 to 2022.

Court documents revealed that Weiss exploited his access to the businesses’ financial accounts to make over 100 fraudulent transfers to accounts he controlled. To conceal his actions, he falsified the companies’ financial records, presenting the stolen money as legitimate expenses for vendors related to software, advertising, and marketing.

Weiss used the stolen funds to fund a lavish lifestyle, paying for a luxury apartment, high-end vehicles including an Audi and Mercedes-Benz, and luxury retail purchases at stores like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Neiman Marcus, and Tiffany. He also spent money on multiple stays at The Ritz-Carlton.

In addition to his prison sentence, Weiss was ordered to pay restitution of $1,644,235.77 to the businesses he defrauded.
