LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A Louisville couple, Amanda Brooke West and her husband Joseph Aaron Phelps, have been charged with theft and fraud after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from Athletx Sports Group over nearly two years.
West, who worked for Athletx between December 2022 and October 2024, was given company credit cards to book rental cars and hotels for youth sports teams. However, police say she misused the cards for personal expenses, including vacations, groceries, online purchases, gas, attorney fees, and more.
Authorities linked Phelps to the scheme, alleging that he frequently picked up rental cars booked with company funds. Though he worked as a contractor for Athletx, he was not a full-time employee.
Phelps, who also teaches an electrical class at Iroquois High School, was previously interviewed by WAVE News for an unrelated story. As of February 24, he is still listed as an employee on the school’s website.
Both West and Phelps are currently being held at the Shelby County Detention Center and are scheduled for arraignment on March 7.
