A man was arrested in Puducherry for using a fake woman’s profile to scam unsuspecting men. Reports indicate that at least 200 victims were duped into paying substantial amounts of money, believing they were interacting with a genuine woman.
In the digital age, social media platforms are frequently misused for fraudulent activities, including the creation of fake identities. In this instance, the perpetrator set up a false profile using images and videos of a woman to entice men into paying for phone calls and personal meetings.
The scheme unraveled when a woman from Chennai discovered her photos were being circulated on a fake profile. The scammer, posing as her, demanded payments from men for various interactions: Rs800 for a phone call, Rs3,000 for a video call, and Rs8,000 for an in-person meeting.
Upon learning of the situation, the woman filed a complaint with the cybercrime unit. Following her report, police began an investigation, engaging with the scammer under the guise of a potential victim. Through a series of interactions, the scammer eventually shared his Google Pay number, which helped authorities identify him.
The suspect, identified as Krishnan, a resident of Puducherry who worked in a jewelry shop, was arrested after police traced the payments and his location. During interrogation, it was revealed that he had scammed approximately 200 men, amassing over Rs2 lakh from his fraudulent endeavors. To further deceive his victims, Krishnan used technology to manipulate his voice, making it sound female.
Many victims, feeling embarrassed about the situation, had refrained from filing complaints, enabling Krishnan to continue his scams until now.
