Matthew Soper Charged with 64 Crimes in Multi-Region Crime Spree

Surrey RCMP have charged Matthew Soper, 64, with over 60 criminal offences in a suspected crime spree spanning just over a month across B.C.’s Lower Mainland. Soper is accused of a series of residential break-ins in which he targeted garage door openers, returning later to access homes.

The investigation began on June 6 when RCMP’s Property Crime Target Team launched a multi-jurisdictional probe into the break-ins. After identifying Soper as the suspect, he was arrested on July 10.

Following his arrest, police executed a search warrant at Soper’s residence, recovering several stolen items, including sunglasses, body armor, golf clubs, and personal identification documents.

Soper remains in custody as he faces 64 charges, with his court appearance scheduled for September 17. His alleged crime spree spanned multiple regions, including Surrey, Delta, Abbotsford, West Vancouver, and North Vancouver, with charges dating from May 31 to July 8.

Sgt. Jordan Davies of Surrey RCMP’s Auto Theft and Property Crime Unit emphasized the significant impact residential break-ins have on communities. “Our team’s diligent efforts resulted in the arrest of this prolific property offender, making B.C. communities safer,” Davies said.

Surrey RCMP has thanked White Rock RCMP and the Abbotsford Police Department for their assistance in the investigation.
