NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Joshua Thomas Smalls, 29, has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime after a shooting in North Charleston left one man dead Saturday afternoon.
According to North Charleston Police Department spokesperson Harve Jacobs, officers responded to a report of a shooting on the 8400 block of Preakness Drive at 12:30 p.m. Multiple calls had come in from the area, some reporting a physical altercation, and one from an individual claiming that their husband had been shot.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found two men lying on the ground, covered in blood. A witness was attempting to stop the bleeding from one of the victims. Both men were transported to a local hospital, but one was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses provided statements that helped piece together the incident. According to the police report, Smalls told investigators that he went to the victim’s home intending to scare him with a firearm. However, when the victim reached for the weapon, Smalls shot him. Additionally, a witness reportedly told police, “someone told him to come and do this.”
This remains an active investigation, and more details will be released as they become available. At this time, a mugshot for Smalls has not been made available.
