Former Employee Sentenced to Jail After Impersonating Officer

Ryan Smith sentenced for impersonating law enforcement in theft case

PAPILLION, Neb. (WOWT) — Ryan Smith, a former employee of a company responsible for assisting authorities in transporting deceased bodies, was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Monday.

At the sentencing hearing, Sarpy County District Court Judge Nathan Cox addressed Smith’s actions, calling the theft and trespassing issues concerning, but noting that the most troubling aspect was Smith’s impersonation of a law enforcement officer. Judge Cox stated that Smith, 42, falsely claimed to be working as an agent of the sheriff when attempting to retrieve a life-sized sex doll, even suggesting he could get a sheriff’s warrant if there was resistance.

Court documents revealed that Smith was involved in collecting a body following a natural death at a residence in October 2023. Later that day, Smith contacted the property manager, claiming the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office had instructed him to retrieve the sex doll found at the scene.

When the property manager went to investigate unusual sounds, he found Smith inside the apartment, his clothing disheveled, with the deadbolt locked and chain secured. The situation, described by Joseph Fabian, a deputy public defender with Sarpy County, as “extremely strange,” was widely covered by the media, though Fabian argued that the public portrayal of Smith’s actions was inaccurate.

Smith was charged for impersonating an officer and theft in connection to the incident.
