Dibrugarh Police arrested two individuals on Tuesday in connection with the mob lynching of a youth suspected of goat theft. The accused have been identified as Lakhindra Bhakta and Sanjib Munda.
The tragic incident took place on Monday morning at around 10:30 am in the Hatigarh Bokpara Division of Bokul Tea Estate, where an angry mob attacked two youths, accusing them of stealing goats. Shankar Gogoi, the victim, died on the spot from severe injuries, while Jyotirmoy Hazarika, the other youth, was critically injured and rushed to Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) for treatment.
According to police, the suspects arrived on a scooter and were immediately caught by the locals. The mob then assaulted the duo and set their scooter on fire. “The two suspected goat thieves were caught red-handed by residents of the area, and the crowd reacted violently,” a police official stated.
After the incident, police took six persons into custody for questioning. Following their interrogation, Lakhindra Bhakta and Sanjib Munda were arrested and have been forwarded to court. Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy confirmed that further investigations are underway, and additional arrests are likely.
The deceased has been identified as Shankar Gogoi of Borbaruah, while Jyotirmoy Hazarika from Boiragimoth remains in critical condition.
