PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — A 21-year-old Portland man, Hamsa Omar, is facing multiple charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase before crashing into a tree early Wednesday morning.
Portland police discovered Omar asleep behind the wheel of his car near Walton Street train tracks around 4:10 a.m. When officers attempted to speak with him, Omar sped off, initiating a pursuit. The chase ended when Omar crashed into a tree on Ocean Avenue, then fled on foot.
Using a K-9 unit from Falmouth, officers located Omar hiding behind a nearby house. Upon arrest, Omar was found with a handgun, 17 grams of cocaine, seven grams of fentanyl, several oxycontin pills, and over $5,700 in cash.
Omar has been charged with aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, unlawful possession of a scheduled drug, aggravated criminal mischief, operating a vehicle without a license, driving to endanger, and failing to stop for an officer.
