The Nirjuli Police have successfully solved a six-month-old murder case with the arrest of Deep Perme (31), who surrendered before the Joint Magistrate First Class (JMFC) in Yupia on June 20, 2024.
The victim, Nangram Menia Sangha (35), a resident of Kurung Kumey district, was found brutally strangled in her rented room in Nirjuli on December 14, 2023. The police had been investigating the case since the discovery of her body, but the identity of the murderer remained unknown.
According to Mihin Gambo, the Superintendent of Police for Naharlagun, police investigation led to the breakthrough when CCTV footage from neighbors showed an unknown suspect leaving the deceased’s room. Further investigation at the crime scene revealed a torn mobile box, which was suspected to have been purchased by the deceased.
A technical analysis of the mobile confirmed that it was registered under Nangram Menia Sangha’s name. Additionally, the phone’s IMEI number indicated frequent contact with a specific number, which was traced back to Deep Perme, a resident of Garakhiya village, PS Ghilamora, Lakhimpur, Assam.
The investigation revealed that Deep Perme had been at the crime scene at the time of the murder. However, by that point, he had fled to Andhra Pradesh, evading police arrest. In January 2024, a police team conducted raids in Andhra Pradesh with local police assistance, but the suspect had already fled to an unknown location.
Over the next six months, the Nirjuli Police, with help from local authorities, conducted several raids in search of Perme, eventually forcing him to go into hiding. He finally surrendered before the JMFC in Yupia on June 20, 2024, ending the investigation.
During questioning, Deep Perme confessed to knowing the victim for a long time. He explained that he had traveled to Nirjuli from Andhra Pradesh on December 12, 2023, and met the deceased. On December 14, 2023, they had a heated argument over personal and business matters, which escalated into violence, leading to the strangulation of Nangram Menia Sangha in her rented room.
