In a significant operation, police in Meghalaya have arrested three individuals involved in a large drug trafficking operation in the Ri Bhoi district. The arrested suspects, identified as Ekramul Hussain, Monjuwara Begum, and Nihar Begum, all hailing from Assam, were apprehended while running a heroin peddling racket in Byrnihat’s 15th Mile locality.
During the raid, law enforcement officials confiscated 254.16 grams of heroin, with an estimated market value of approximately Rs 1 crore. Authorities also seized Rs 58,380 in cash and four mobile phones, further linking the suspects to organized crime syndicates engaged in narcotics smuggling across states.
The case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe deeper into the syndicate’s operations. The SIT will investigate the connections of the suspects with other drug dealers and assess their financial dealings to uncover how they acquired their illicit wealth.
This bust highlights the persistent challenges posed by drug trafficking in the region and underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the spread of narcotics.
