The Hawks’ Durban Serious Corruption Investigation Unit has arrested Lazarus Kenneth Wankhama, a 46-year-old Malawian national, who was wanted in connection with corruption charges and violations of the Immigration Act.
According to Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane, the arrest was carried out on Sunday by Hawks officers following Wankhama’s evasion of justice after a prior incident dating back to September 2021.
Wankhama had previously been arrested by the Hawks’ Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation team for the theft of crude oil. During that arrest, Wankhama allegedly attempted to bribe police officers with R50,000 in exchange for his release.
“The officers launched an undercover operation and recovered R49,900 in trap money from Wankhama’s possession,” said Ncane.
Although the case was provisionally withdrawn in court pending further investigation, Wankhama absconded once authorities were ready to refile charges, prompting the issuance of a warrant for his arrest.
Following his apprehension on Sunday, Wankhama appeared before the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The case has been remanded until Thursday for a formal bail application.
Major General Lesetja Senona, head of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, praised the investigation team, stating:
“This arrest and ongoing investigation exemplify the unwavering commitment of the Hawks to rooting out corruption and ensuring that justice is served.”
