Jacob Ewert Fired, Charged with Battery After Jail Incident

Morgan County Officer Faces Felony Charges for Misconduct

by Amelia Crawford

Martinsville, Ind. (WISH) — A correctional officer from Morgan County Jail has been dismissed and is facing criminal charges following an altercation with an inmate, according to the sheriff’s office.

Jacob Ewert, 31, a Martinsville resident, had been employed at the jail for seven years before his termination, said Sheriff Richard W. Myers in a press release Thursday. The formal charges, filed Tuesday in Morgan Superior Court 2, include battery and official misconduct, both of which are classified as low-level felonies.

Ewert served as an assistant jail supervisor during his tenure at the facility, as indicated by online records.

The sheriff’s statement did not clarify the circumstances leading up to the confrontation or whether the inmate sustained injuries beyond what was indicated in the battery charge, which suggests the inmate suffered moderate bodily harm.
