The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Meerut has arrested 50-year-old Mohd Ikramuddin, a key figure in an embezzlement case involving Rs15 lakh intended for madrassa students. The fraud, which affected 99 madrassas in Meerut, was part of a larger scheme that misappropriated over Rs3.5 crore allocated for scholarships to minority students.
EOW Inspector Ajay Sharma revealed that Ikramuddin had been evading arrest for six years before he was apprehended on Sunday at his residence in Zakir Nagar Colony. Ikramuddin, who owned six madrassas in the city, is linked to six separate cases of fraud. The scam dates back to the 2010-11 academic year, and the primary suspects include the then-district minority officer and her two subordinates. Numerous madrassa owners, principals, and treasurers are also under investigation.
Sharma explained that the investigation, which resulted in 99 FIRs filed between 2012 and 2019, was triggered by government orders. A total of 40 individuals have been arrested, and charge sheets have been filed in their cases. Investigations continue to confirm the status of other implicated individuals, with authorities checking whether they are alive or deceased.
