Edward L. Altum Convicted of Second-Degree Homicide in Wife’s Death

Newton Man Found Guilty in 2023 Shooting of Peggy Sue Altum

WICHITA, Kan. — A 71-year-old man from Newton, Kansas, has been convicted of second-degree intentional homicide and aggravated battery in the killing of his wife, Peggy Sue Altum.

The shooting took place in December 2023 in the 2000 block of Terrace Drive in Newton. Edward L. Altum was found guilty of fatally shooting his wife, Peggy Sue Altum, and initially told police at the scene that his wife had been shot, but refused to provide further details.

Peggy Sue Altum succumbed to her injuries over the weekend following the shooting. Edward Altum was initially charged with first-degree murder, but after a trial, he was convicted on the lesser charge of second-degree homicide.

The case has drawn significant attention in the Newton community, and Edward Altum’s sentencing will be determined at a later date.
