David Mumford, a 40-year-old man from Catherine Street, Coventry, has been sentenced to 42 months in prison after being arrested just 10 minutes following a break-in at a house in Blackhorse Road, Longford, Coventry, on November 7.
Mumford was spotted by officers driving a suspicious vehicle near Sephton Drive in the early hours of the morning. Upon investigation, it was revealed that he had broken into the house, stolen the key to a BMW, and attempted to drive off in the vehicle. When approached by police, Mumford tried to lock the doors, but was quickly arrested. He was found with a balaclava and gloves, and the stolen car keys were found attached to the house keys.
Mumford pleaded guilty to burglary, possession of cannabis, driving without insurance, and driving while disqualified. He was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court, receiving 18 months for the burglary and additional time for breaching a suspended sentence order. In total, he faces 42 months behind bars and will be banned from owning a driving license for two years.
Detective Constable Samir Hassan, who led the investigation, stated, “Mumford was caught red-handed in a stolen vehicle less than half a mile from the scene of the crime. This should be a clear wake-up call for him to reconsider his criminal path.”
