A 23-year-old autorickshaw driver, BS Mithun, was arrested for stealing Rs 10 lakh in cash and 125 grams of gold from his grandmother’s home in Vijayanandanagar. Mithun, who lives in Chandan Layout, Sunkadakatte, used a duplicate key to enter the house on May 3 while his grandmother, BT Puttananjamma, was away attending a village festival.
Puttananjamma, who owns multiple rental properties, had recently taken a Rs 10 lakh loan for repairs on one of her buildings. Mithun, believing his grandmother did not support him financially, decided to steal the valuables kept at her home.
The crime was discovered when Puttananjamma returned on May 5. Police found the main door intact but noticed the cupboard was broken, indicating the use of a duplicate key. Puttananjamma suspected Mithun and lodged a complaint.
Following his arrest, Mithun admitted to selling the stolen gold at various locations in the city and giving the cash to a friend. Authorities have recovered 81 grams of gold and Rs 8.9 lakh in cash, while Mithun and his accomplice spent the rest. The police are continuing their investigation.
