A 25-year-old man from Assam, Mithun Namadas, was arrested on Wednesday for attempting to steal gold from a jewellery shop in the city.

Mithun, who worked at a textile shop on Vaishiyal Street, was caught after breaking into a neighbouring gold jewellery store owned by Arun Kumar, 49, from Selvapuram. On Monday morning, Arun Kumar noticed that someone had broken a window and tried to steal gold jewellery from a locker inside the shop. He immediately filed a complaint with the Bazar police station.

A special police team, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) G Karthikeyan, investigated the attempted theft. Upon reviewing CCTV footage, police saw Mithun entering the jewellery shop through the broken window. He was arrested after confessing to the crime during questioning.

According to the police commissioner, Mithun had been observing the jewellery shop workers and had noted the location of the valuables. He planned the theft carefully but failed to open or break the lockers after entering the shop.

Mithun was produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
