North Charleston, S.C. (WCSC) – North Charleston Police released details on Monday about two men arrested for driving under suspension during their “Sober or Slammer” campaign, which aims to reduce impaired driving and traffic violations.
James Cantey III, 41, was arrested on December 28 for a fourth offense of driving under suspension and as a habitual traffic offender. He was stopped on Dorchester Road at Bream Road for having a broken passenger-side headlight. Upon questioning, Cantey admitted to driving with a suspended license and was found to have been classified as a habitual offender for five years.
Jermaine Samuel Scott, 45, was charged with an eighth offense of driving under suspension, habitual offender status, and disregarding a traffic control device. Scott was arrested on December 31 after running a red light at the intersection of Ashley Phosphate Road and Rivers Avenue, nearly causing a crash. Investigators later confirmed that Scott’s license had been suspended due to unpaid traffic tickets and his habitual offender status.
Driving as a habitual offender is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Both men were booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center. Cantey was released on a $2,000 bond, while Scott was released on a $5,232.50 bond.
