UP STF Arrests Four in Digital Arrest Fraud Case

Lucknow Men Scammed Rs 1.29 Crore Posing as CBI Officials

by Ananya Mehta

The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police has successfully busted a digital arrest scam racket and arrested four men — Shayam, Sudhir, Rajnish, and Mahendra — from Lucknow.

The accused allegedly posed as CBI officials, threatening victims with digital arrest and extorting large sums of money from them. One major victim, retired scientist Shukdev Nandi of the Veterinary Research Institute, was duped out of Rs 1.29 crores and kept under fake digital arrest for three days.

Upon realizing the deception, Nandi lodged a complaint with the Bareilly Cyber Police Station, prompting a swift police investigation. Using digital forensics and tracking, the police identified and apprehended the four accused on Saturday.

This arrest marks a significant step in curbing the rising trend of digital fraud and cyber extortion in Uttar Pradesh.
