In a shocking incident, Umendra Singh Thakur (32), a daily wage worker and ragpicker, was allegedly beaten to death by five men on suspicion of theft at a construction site near Musakhedi bridge in Indore.

According to Additional DCP Alok Sharma, Thakur’s body was found Tuesday morning in front of the PTC ground with visible injury marks on his hands, legs, and back. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries.

The investigation revealed that security guards at the bridge site suspected Thakur of stealing construction materials. He had reportedly visited a local scrap dealer before being confronted. The guards detained him for questioning, during which they allegedly assaulted him.

After the beating, Thakur somehow managed to walk to the PTC service road, where he collapsed and died.

Following a review of CCTV footage and witness statements, five individuals were identified. Four—Ramavtar, Bahadur, Rahul, and Sahil—have been arrested, while the fifth suspect, Sujit, remains at large. All the accused were reportedly working as guards or laborers at the site.

Thakur is survived by his mother and four married sisters. His family and local residents are demanding justice and compensation, claiming he was wrongly accused and brutally killed. They staged a protest by bringing his body to Azad Nagar police station, demanding swift action against all those involved.

Police have registered a case of murder, and efforts to apprehend the absconding suspect are ongoing.
