Bhavani Town police in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district rescued a seven-month-old baby allegedly trafficked from Bengaluru on Sunday, August 31. Two women, Selvi (37) and Janaki (47), were arrested in connection with the case.

Following a tip-off, police and officials from the Erode District Child Welfare Committee conducted a search at a house on Palanipuram Fourth Street, Bhavani. There, they found the infant with Selvi and Janaki, who were reportedly estranged from their families and living together.

Preliminary investigations revealed the women had acquired the baby for Rs2.7 lakh and kept the child in their custody for over a month. Police said the duo intended to sell the infant to a childless couple for money.

The rescued baby has been placed in a government-recognized children’s home in Erode. Selvi and Janaki were presented before the court and remanded in custody. Police continue to investigate to identify others
