The Kandivali Police have arrested two men for breaking into a temple and stealing cash from the donation box in Kandivali West. The accused have also been linked to a similar theft at a temple in Malad East.
The men have been identified as Prashant Chorat (30) and Ali Raza Khan (38). On December 23, between 3 am and 5 am, they smashed the door lock of a Shankar temple on SV Road and stole Rs50,000 from the donation box.
After an FIR was filed on December 26, police reviewed CCTV footage, which showed the suspects arriving at the temple in an auto and leaving via the Western Express Highway toward Mira Road. Officers located the auto and apprehended Khan, a Mira Road resident, who then revealed the whereabouts of Chorat, who had fled to his hometown in Satara. Police traveled to Satara and successfully arrested Chorat.
The investigation was conducted by IO Hemant Gite under the supervision of DCP Sandeep Jadhav, ACP Nita Padvi, and Senior Inspector Karan Sonkavde. Authorities noted that the duo had operated similarly in previous incidents, and the case highlights coordinated intercity policing to apprehend offenders.
