On the night of December 14 in Camarillo, California, a thief decided to take two security cameras from St. John’s Seminary. But technology had other plans. One of the stolen cameras inadvertently connected to the internet, giving authorities the lead they needed.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, in a statement released on Christmas Eve, revealed that the suspect, 20-year-old Tristin James Yanez of Camarillo, was identified through the camera’s online activity.
Officers, armed with a search warrant, traced the camera to Yanez’s residence. The subsequent search recovered both stolen cameras, ultimately turning the investigation in the authorities’ favor. Yanez was arrested for felony grand theft and booked into Ventura County Main Jail.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office continues to encourage residents to stay engaged in crime prevention through social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. They also offer a reward via Ventura County Crime Stoppers for tips that lead to arrests.
