Despite ongoing police efforts to curb drug peddling and smuggling, illegal drug trade continues to thrive in various parts of Tripura due to lapses in law enforcement and judicial delays. The situation was highlighted again with the arrest of two drug peddlers in Dharma Nagar and the seizure of a significant quantity of contraband.
Acting on a tip-off, the Dharma Nagar police team stopped a high-speed autorickshaw (vehicle number TRO5A-2842) near the police station. A thorough search led to the recovery of 1800 ‘Yaba’ tablets, valued at approximately Rs 9 lakh in the black market.
Officer-in-charge Smriti Kanta Bardhan identified the arrested suspects as Asish Chakma and Vishal Chakma. The seized drugs are currently held under police custody, and the accused are being presented in court for police remand and further interrogation.
Bardhan stated that the crackdown on drug trafficking will persist, emphasizing Dharma Nagar’s role as a key transit hub for drug smuggling from Mizoram into Tripura. The police remain committed to dismantling the entire network of drug peddlers and smugglers operating in the region.
