A woman in Vietnam’s central Quang Nam Province has been accused of murdering her son in an attempt to fraudulently claim insurance money. To Thi Ty Na, 44, was arrested on April 5 after an investigation revealed the details of the crime.

Na’s involvement in the tragic death of her 15-year-old son, Nguyen Van Hoang, was uncovered following a review of unsolved cases. Major General Nguyen Huu Hop, director of the provincial police, ordered the reevaluation of cases that had been suspended due to insufficient evidence. During this review, the case of Nguyen’s suspicious death, which occurred on January 2, 2023, was reopened.

On that night, around 10:05 p.m., Nguyen was found dead in the bathroom of his mother’s home in Ha Lam Town, Thang Binh District. Police initially thought it was an accidental death, but after further investigation and a reenactment of the crime scene two days before Na’s arrest, authorities concluded that she had intentionally killed her son.

The motive behind the crime was revealed to be a fraudulent insurance claim. However, the details of the method and the insurance amount involved have not yet been disclosed by authorities.

Na’s arrest has raised serious concerns about the lengths to which some individuals will go for financial gain, even at the cost of a child’s life.
