The Ludhiana police have arrested three men in connection with the murder of 45-year-old taxi driver Gurmeet Singh alias Bittu. The grim discovery unfolded when police found Gurmeet’s blood-soaked Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire abandoned in Mohi village on Monday.
Following the accused’s confession, Gurmeet’s body was recovered from a canal near Tugal village on Tuesday. Authorities revealed the motive was robbery.
The arrested suspects—Harpreet Singh alias Happy and Gurtejpreet Singh alias Guri, both residents of Mohi village, and Gurwant Singh from Boora Patti in Dakha—allegedly planned to kill Gurmeet and sell his vehicle for quick money. The accused are aged between 23 and 25 years and reportedly have no prior criminal records.
The case began when police found the blood-stained taxi linked to Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Ashapuri in Aggar Nagar, Ludhiana. After contacting the victim’s wife, Narinder Kaur, a kidnapping complaint was filed at Sudhar police station under Sections 140(3) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to hiring Gurmeet’s taxi early Monday morning under the pretense of traveling to Raikot. DSP Varinder Singh Khosa explained, “The driver shared his live location with a friend, showing caution. But at Mohi, the accused attempted to snatch the car at knifepoint. Gurmeet resisted and was fatally stabbed.”
After the murder, the trio dumped Gurmeet’s body in the canal and abandoned the vehicle. Police also recovered two motorcycles the accused used prior to hiring the taxi.
Additional charges under Sections 103(1), 309(4), and 317(2) of the BNS were added to the FIR. Investigations are ongoing.
