Gorakhpur police have arrested two thieves, Monu Gaud alias Baba Nayak and Hasan Khan, for robbing retired principal Prof. Saroj Srivastava’s house. The culprits stole gold jewelry worth Rs30 lakh and Rs2 lakh in cash, spending hours drinking and gambling inside the house.
The robbery took place while Prof. Saroj Srivastava had gone to Bengaluru to visit her son. The thieves, aware of her absence, used a cutter machine to break open cupboards and collect the valuables. CCTV footage captured the suspects escaping with the loot.
Police identified the thieves through the footage and arrested Monu Gaud from Ramgarh Tal. With his help, Hasan Khan was subsequently caught. Investigations revealed that Monu’s mother had worked at Prof. Srivastava’s house for 20 years, giving him detailed knowledge of the property.
Both accused admitted that they spent about four hours inside the house drinking and gambling before fleeing. Monu has six prior cases registered, including under the Gangster Act, while Hasan has four, including theft and molestation.
Recovered from their homes were gold necklaces worth approximately Rs30 lakh and cash of Rs1.98 lakh. The remaining money was spent by the duo on gambling.
Prof. Saroj Srivastava, a retired principal of Government AD Girls’ Inter College, thanked the police officials, including SP City Abhinav Tyagi and CO Cant Yogendra Singh, for solving the case within just four days.
