In a deeply disturbing incident from Sepahijala district, Tripura Police have arrested a 28-year-old woman, Suchitra Debbarma, for allegedly murdering her five-month-old daughter. The shocking crime is believed to have been committed so she could elope with another man with whom she had been having an extramarital affair.

The incident came to light on Sunday when neighbors noticed the infant unresponsive and the mother missing from their home in Rampadapara village. Officer-in-charge of Sonamura Police Station, Tapas Das, led the police team that found the child lying on a bed, already lifeless. The baby was rushed to the Sonamura sub-divisional hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

The woman was later apprehended from the same village. According to the police, preliminary investigation and her confession revealed that Suchitra strangled the baby while her husband, Amit Debbarma, was away at work in a rubber plantation.

“She admitted she killed her child so she could leave with her lover,” said OC Tapas Das. The exact circumstances of the murder will be confirmed after a post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case, and further legal proceedings are underway.
