Three Arrested in Colorado Springs Stolen Vehicle Investigation
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) — Three individuals were arrested and charged on Thursday following a stolen vehicle investigation, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).
Police located a stolen 2004 red Hyundai Elantra in the area of East Costilla Street and South Nevada Avenue and began surveillance. The driver was identified as 39-year-old Steven Russel, with Lee Gilbert, 39, identified later as the passenger.
Shortly after leaving a business in the 200 block of North Chelton Road, Gilbert was seen driving the stolen Hyundai. When officers attempted a traffic stop near Pikes Peak Avenue and North Circle Drive, Gilbert allegedly fled the scene.
Detectives later tracked the suspects to the 1500 block of South Nevada Avenue, where they abandoned the car and walked away. Officers quickly arrested both Russel and Gilbert.
Rachael Bruno-Watts, 33, was also in the vehicle and tried to run when approached by detectives but was detained without incident.
Steven Russel was charged as a prolific motor vehicle theft offender. He has two prior convictions for auto theft (2019 and 2022).
Lee Gilbert was charged with motor vehicle theft and eluding police.
Rachael Bruno-Watts was charged with obstruction.
All three are in custody as the investigation continues.
