Steven Griffin, a Springfield man, has been indicted on eight charges, including first-degree murder, after the prolonged abuse and subsequent death of his 16-year-old stepson, Daniel Garza. Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser announced the charges in connection to Garza’s tragic death, which occurred on February 7, 2025.

According to the indictment, Griffin is accused of intentionally subjecting Garza to extreme abuse. The charges detail a disturbing account of neglect, with Griffin allegedly failing to provide Garza with adequate food or water, and further exacerbating the abuse by inflicting blunt force injuries. Griffin is accused of inflicting severe burns on Garza’s face, neck, and chest by throwing hot water on him, in addition to using nunchucks to strike Garza and stomping on his ankle, which resulted in a fracture. These acts of violence culminated in the young teen’s death.

The family had moved to Springfield from Washington in November 2024, and they had been living in hotels. On January 27, 2025, Garza was brought to St. John’s Hospital by his mother, Kristin Griffin, and stepfather, Steven Griffin. Upon arrival, Garza was unresponsive and not breathing, with a dangerously low body temperature of 86 degrees. Weighing only 94 pounds, he was found to have suffered from subdural hemorrhaging, burns, bruising, and fractures.

Garza was transferred to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for further care before being sent to Indianapolis for specialized treatment. Despite efforts to save him, Garza passed away on February 7, 2025.

Griffin now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder and aggravated domestic battery, as well as additional counts related to the torture and mistreatment of Garza. The case has shaken the community, with many expressing shock and outrage over the details of the abuse.

Griffin remains in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the events surrounding Garza’s death, and additional charges may follow.

This heartbreaking case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals from abuse and the devastating consequences of unchecked violence.
