Once a regular salesman, Sohan Singh Rawat, also known by his aliases Sonu and Buggu, has become a notorious figure in Delhi’s crime records. According to police, Rawat’s descent into crime began in 2019, when he quit his low-paying job in search of quick money.
Facing financial struggles, he committed his first theft in Amar Colony, and over the next six years, Rawat was allegedly involved in at least 26 cases of theft and snatching across prominent areas such as RK Puram, Kalkaji, Hauz Khas, Saket, and Naraina.
Police say Rawat operated alone to reduce the risk of betrayal and exposure. He typically wore full-sleeved shirts and a helmet to hide his identity during crimes.
Though Rawat studied only up to Class VIII, he was adept at evading law enforcement. After each arrest, he would shift to a new locality, staying ahead of police surveillance. His previous hideouts included Sangam Vihar, Chirag Dilli, and Dakshinpuri.
To further obscure his identity, Rawat reportedly changed his and his father’s names in official documents. His actions prevented police from registering him as a ‘bad character’ in their books.
Personal life troubles added to his detachment. Rawat separated from his wife a year ago, and his family disowned him four years back due to his criminal activities. He currently lives in Okhla, while his family resides in Chirag Dilli.
Despite multiple arrests, including one for motor vehicle theft in April, Rawat continued his illegal activities. He was recently arrested again in connection with the chain snatching of Lok Sabha MP R Sudha.
Police say he showed no signs of reform, making him a persistent threat in the city.
