SCRANTON, Iowa — A Scranton woman was arrested on February 6 following an alleged vehicle theft incident involving about $14,000 in items.
According to court documents, the vehicle’s owner had previously asked 61-year-old Karen Gillman to sign the registration due to the owner’s driving record. Investigators say Gillman later sold the vehicle to a resident of Boone, providing a title and bill of sale, but complications arose regarding possession.
The Boone resident stated that when he attempted to retrieve the vehicle on October 3, Gillman was unavailable. The affidavit notes that items associated with the vehicle were left at another residence at Gillman’s request.
Investigators discovered that Gillman obtained a duplicate title in August, allegedly to prevent the vehicle from being taken to a junkyard. Court records suggest Gillman wanted to dispose of the vehicle after claiming she had been abused by the victim. She later denied that the Boone resident had come to her home on October 3.
An arrest warrant was issued on January 16 charging Gillman with aiding and abetting in a first-degree theft, a Class C felony. She was booked into the Greene County Jail under a $10,000 cash or surety bond.
