Three men, including two autorickshaw drivers, were arrested for allegedly stealing a 1.2kg gold bar from a goldsmith who had fallen off his bike near the Simpson bus stand in Chintadripet on Saturday.
The police recovered the stolen gold and seized two autorickshaws used during the crime. According to Chintadripet police, the victim, 54-year-old Ramgopal Maji of Nammalwar Street, runs a gold workshop in Sowcarpet. He was returning from a jewellery store in T Nagar when he lost control of his bike, resulting in a leg fracture.
Two nearby auto drivers came to his aid and arranged for him to be taken to a hospital. However, once at the hospital, Ramgopal discovered that the 1.2kg gold bar stored in his two-wheeler was missing.
Following an investigation, police arrested Santhoshkumar (26), Rajasekar alias Bhuubalan (32), and Ilavarasan alias Sibi (22) in connection with the theft.
