A 44-year-old mechanic from Hosur, S. Madhavan, was arrested by Vaniyambadi Town police in Tirupattur on Sunday after he pledged fake gold jewellery and fraudulently took Rs1.5 lakh in cash from a local pawn broker.
According to police, Madhavan approached R. Sait, a 47-year-old jewellery shop owner in Vaniyambadi, on September 9. Claiming he needed money for his family’s medical expenses, he handed over what appeared to be a genuine five-sovereign gold chain.
Sait said the chain looked authentic during an initial inspection, prompting him to provide the cash. However, upon rechecking the ornament later, he discovered it was merely a gold-coated steel chain.
He promptly alerted the Vaniyambadi Town police, who launched an investigation. Using CCTV footage from the area and analyzing mobile tower signals, officers were able to trace Madhavan’s movements and locate him at his hideout in Hosur.
Madhavan was arrested and a case was filed. He is currently lodged in the sub-jail at Tirupattur, and further investigation is underway.
