DOUGLAS COUNTY, Mo. – A Norwood man has been indicted on six felony theft charges for allegedly defrauding clients out of more than $800,000 in a large-scale construction scam.
Robert Smith, 44, was taken into custody Wednesday after a Douglas County Grand Jury indicted him on three counts of stealing over $25,000 and three counts of stealing $750 or more.
According to investigators, Smith, a contractor by trade, allegedly accepted payments from six separate victims for construction projects, claiming the money would be used for building materials and labor. However, detectives say he failed to purchase materials or complete the promised work.
The investigation, led by Douglas County Detective Nathan Long, revealed a months-long pattern of fraud that ultimately led to Smith’s indictment.
Smith’s bond is set at $50,000 cash only. He was arrested in Wright County with the help of the Mountain Grove Police Department and the Troop G Relentless Pursuit Taskforce.
Sheriff Chris Degase commended the agencies involved, stating,
“This was a complex case, and we’re grateful for the cooperation and determination of all involved in bringing Mr. Smith into custody.”
Smith remains in custody as he awaits trial.
