by Sophia Bennett

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – A chaotic scene unfolded Wednesday night at the United Supermarket on 45th Ave and Bell Street as Raymond Michael Wright, 30, allegedly stole $250 worth of food.

Witnesses said Wright grabbed a basket of groceries and a gallon of milk while an employee yelled at him to stop. Ignoring the warnings, he headed toward a truck waiting in the parking lot.

“He ran out with about $250 of meat,” said an employee who requested anonymity.

As Wright tried to escape, a customer intervened, leading to a scuffle. Another man joined to help restrain Wright as he attempted to enter the truck.

Janay W., a witness, said a woman in the driver’s seat was striking the men with her truck door to free Wright. “She didn’t have the truck in park, and we thought she might run someone over,” Janay explained.

Police arrived as the woman fled in the truck. Officers chased and stopped her near Amarillo High School.

Both suspects were booked into Randall County Jail. Wright faces a second-degree felony robbery charge with a $25,000 bond. Shaylee Rene Rachels, 27, faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, each with a $25,000 bond.

Janay W. added with a laugh, “He had a ton of steak, some oatmeal, some candy… seems like it was worth the crime.”
