Police have arrested a 26-year-old man from Gaya district in Bihar for fraudulently withdrawing Rs1.54 lakh from the bank account of a resident of West Singhbhum district, officials said on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Prince Kumar (26). According to Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Bahaman Tuti, the incident occurred on December 14 at an ATM located in Jain Market, Chaibasa.
The victim, Muku Bari, a resident of Chirchi village, visited the ATM to withdraw cash when his ATM card became stuck inside the machine. Two youths present near the ATM advised him to call a number claiming to be the bank’s customer care service. Trusting the suggestion, Bari contacted the number.
During the call, the accused obtained the victim’s One-Time Password (OTP) and later used it to withdraw Rs1.54 lakh from his account. Bari came to know about the unauthorised withdrawal when he visited the bank the following day.
A special police team analysed CCTV footage and gathered technical evidence, which led to the identification and arrest of Prince Kumar.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to applying adhesive material inside ATM card slots to trap cards and carry out fraud. Police said he admitted to committing similar ATM frauds at multiple locations across Jharkhand.
Efforts are currently underway to identify and arrest his accomplices involved in the scam, officials added.
