CHONBURI — Authorities have arrested seven suspects linked to a shooting involving Chinese nationals in Huai Yai District, Chonburi Province, uncovering drug trafficking connections during the investigation.

Police Lieutenant General Yingyot Thepchamnong, Commander of Provincial Police Region 2, commended Huai Yai Police Station on June 2 for their prompt resolution of the case and seizure of substantial narcotics. The arrested include six Chinese nationals and one Thai woman.

The incident began when 26-year-old Chinese man Qiyang argued with fellow Chinese national Zhijie at a residence. During the altercation, another man, Jubin, shot Qiyang in the right knee with a 9mm pistol, causing injury that prevented his escape. Jubin, Zhijie, and a woman named Junhan then moved the wounded Qiyang indoors and tried to erase blood evidence from the driveway.

Meanwhile, Zhijie fled in a Mercedes-Benz with a bag containing concealed drugs and vaping devices and discarded the firearm in a nearby pond. Police tracked him down, recovered the gun, and found in his car 225.84 grams of methamphetamine, 165.83 grams of ketamine, 711 meth pills, 1,572 vaping items, and five firearms.

Along with the initial suspects Jubin, Zhijie, and Junhan, police also arrested two other Chinese men and a Thai woman. The injured Qiyang has yet to make a statement. Jubin claims self-defense, alleging Qiyang owed him 500,000 baht and attacked when asked for more money, but police doubt this version.

Investigators suspect the shooting arose from disputes over illegal drug dealings. Charges against the seven include attempted murder, illegal firearms possession, and narcotics offenses. Some also face visa violations.
