Salem police have arrested Paadhamuthu (43) and Poondimadha, a married couple from Virudhunagar district, for allegedly cheating another couple of Rs3 lakh by impersonating police officials.
The victims, seeking legal adoption, were approached through a relative by the accused. Paadhamuthu and Poondimadha claimed that a baby was available for adoption but demanded money to complete the process. The couple paid Rs3 lakh before realizing they had been deceived.
Authorities have recovered the money and are investigating the extent of the adoption fraud network. Police have warned citizens to verify legal adoption procedures and avoid transferring money to unverified sources.
