A 27-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in Sangiliyandapuram for receiving a courier package containing Tapentadol opioid tablets, a potent painkiller often abused as a narcotic.
The accused, P Mariya Jennis, a resident of Navalur Kuttapattu, had allegedly ordered 100 grams of Tapentadol tablets from an online seller based in Surat, Gujarat, paying approximately Rs40,000. He tracked the shipment and learned it was set to arrive at a courier office on Manalvarithurai Road.
Unbeknownst to him, police had received a tip-off about the illicit delivery. Officers were already stationed at the courier center and arrested Jennis at around 2:30 PM, moments after he signed for the package.
An investigating officer revealed that Jennis is a habitual offender, previously linked to drug-related cases. A case was registered against him at the Palakkarai police station under the following laws:
BNS Section 123 – Causing hurt by harmful substances
BNS Section 278 – Illegal sale of medicinal drugs
Section 18 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act
Jennis was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. Police are continuing their investigation to trace the supplier and any larger network involved.
