BERKLEY, Mich. — Dominic Johnson, 23, of Oak Park, was arrested on December 4 in connection with a string of porch thefts in Berkley. Police believe Johnson is responsible for multiple package thefts from porches in the area.
The investigation began after a November 27 theft on Cummings Avenue, where a man was captured on security cameras stealing a package containing a watch. The vehicle involved, a Dodge Charger, was seen leaving the scene. On December 4, an off-duty detective from another agency noticed Johnson’s vehicle, suspecting it matched the one from the previous theft. The detective alerted Berkley police.
Officers conducted a traffic stop on Johnson for a violation and discovered he had a suspended driver’s license and was in possession of a counterfeit ID. During the vehicle’s impound, officers found stolen merchandise from the November 27 incident. Additionally, police discovered Johnson had allegedly stolen a knife set from a porch on Robina Avenue, just hours before his arrest.
Police confirmed Johnson’s involvement after reviewing surveillance footage, which showed him wearing the same outfit and driving the same car. Johnson later admitted to committing the thefts. He faces two larceny charges related to the package thefts, as well as charges for driving on a suspended license and possession of fraudulent identification.
Johnson is currently under investigation for possible involvement in similar thefts in the metro area. The Berkley Public Safety Department also encouraged residents to take precautions to prevent package theft, including opting for delivery methods that require signatures or choosing in-store pickups.
Residents are advised to report suspicious activity, such as vehicles following delivery trucks, to the Berkley Public Safety Department at (248) 658-3380.
