Two men, Mohd Hazrat (32) from Kharar and Sangam (29) from Kajehri village, were arrested on Friday for allegedly duping a man of Rs 1.7 lakh by promising to sell him 4,000 USD at half the market rate. The accused took the money but neither delivered the currency nor refunded the victim.
The victim, Ashish, an accounts employee at Shanaya Services in Kharar, Zirakpur, reported that Hazrat approached him on July 31 with an offer to sell US dollars at a discounted rate. After agreeing, Ashish met Hazrat in Burail with Rs 1.7 lakh cash. Hazrat, accompanied by a few others, showed Ashish bundles of US currency in a small bag. After handing over the bag, Hazrat left briefly, and on return, Ashish handed over the cash.
Upon opening the bag, Ashish found it empty. Hazrat and his associates then fled the scene with the money. Despite Ashish’s efforts to contact them, neither the cash nor the promised dollars were returned.
Following Ashish’s complaint at Sector 34 police station, a case was registered and both accused were arrested. Police are investigating further to determine if others were involved in the scam.
