Man Steals Own Mortgaged Van to Avoid Loan Repayment

CCTV reveals Vinod Waskale’s unusual theft plot

by Ananya Mehta

Barwani police have arrested Vinod Waskale from Malgaon for stealing his own mortgaged pick-up van in the Khetia police station area. The unusual case came to light after CCTV footage revealed Vinod himself taking the vehicle from a location where it had been parked.

According to Khetia police in-charge Surendra Kanesh, Vinod had initially lodged a complaint on December 25, claiming his vehicle was stolen. Investigation and examination of nearby CCTV footage showed him taking the van, leading to his arrest and judicial custody.

Vinod admitted that he had mortgaged the vehicle for Rs 3 lakh but had not used the money to pay the five overdue loan instalments. To avoid repayment, he devised a plan to steal the van and file a false theft report, thinking this would help him evade both the finance company and the person holding the vehicle as security.

After taking the vehicle, Vinod drove it to Barwani and parked it in a forested area in Mortalai. Police later recovered the van and confirmed the irregularities in his loan repayment.
