A man identified as Amarjit has been arrested for allegedly looting an Axis Bank branch in Shamli district. The police recovered over Rs 30 lakh of the stolen amount from him. The robbery took place on October 1, when Amarjit entered the bank, held the branch manager at gunpoint, and demanded Rs 40 lakh in cash.
According to the branch manager, Naveen Jain, the masked robber threatened to kill him if he did not comply. Fearing for his life, Jain instructed his cashier, Rohit, to retrieve the money, which was handed over to the accused. Amarjit then fled the scene on his bike.
The accused reportedly told the manager that he needed the money to repay a loan and threatened to commit suicide or harm the manager if his demands were not met.
Following a swift investigation, the police arrested Amarjit in his village of Lilon, Shamli district. Rs 30.2 lakh in cash and two pistols were recovered from his possession. The police have praised their quick response, and a reward of Rs 50,000 has been announced for the officers involved in the case.
Saharanpur Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajay Kumar Sahni confirmed the arrest and stated that Amarjit had confessed to the crime.
