Wanowrie police arrested Sudha Rajesh Chaughule, 35, for allegedly stealing gold and diamond jewelry valued at Rs5.87 lakh from the home of retired wing commander Satish Makashir, 78, in Sopan Baug. The theft reportedly occurred between August 21 and 28.
Initially, Makashir filed a complaint against an unknown person as he had no suspects. However, the police soon grew suspicious of the two maids employed at his residence. Acting on a tip-off, they traced Sudha attempting to mortgage the stolen jewelry on BT Kawade Road.
Sudha was apprehended and brought to the police station, where she confessed to the theft and revealed the location of the hidden jewelry.
A Wanowrie police officer stated, “Our close watch on the maids and quick coordination helped us arrest the accused within 24 hours of the crime report.”
